I recently read an interesting article in the Economist on ‘Will the bonds blow up?‘.
I learnt about how the global economy faces unprecedented debt pressures, with debt-to-GDP ratios at all-time highs in many major economies. The belief that countries, unlike companies, cannot “go bust” is long gone. Borrowing costs have risen worldwide amid an AI boom and persistent energy inflation. Across advanced nations, sovereign debt has roughly doubled as a share of GDP since 2000. To reduce these risks, policymakers must urgently overhaul fiscal spending, keep debt growth below GDP growth, and sustain economic expansion. Targeted reforms should address inefficiencies and narrow the gap between government spending and revenue, while government savings should be diversified across international markets and industries.
We see debt all around us from student loans to credit card debts and from corporate borrowing to sovereign debt. It made me wonder whether it is really possible to contain the debt crisis? Are we all just prisoners of debt? Is my generation going to carry the burden of global debt?
