Read an interesting piece in MIT Technology Review on AI Safety Disasters. The piece argues a very interesting angle that is often overlooked that how safe technology isn’t always good technology. Just because a platform removes the most dangerous stuff doesn’t mean it’s really helping us. Social media and AI apps are built to keep us coming back. We scroll for hours, compare our lives to other people’s posts, and sometimes talk to chatbots instead of real friends. None of this looks like a huge problem, but slowly and steadily it can change how we think, how we feel, and how we treat people.
The main thing I took away is that we shouldn’t settle for apps that are just not harmful. We should ask whether they make our lives better. Whether they help us learn, think for ourselves, and build real relationships.
